Shaw carpet
warranty requires scheduled cleanings by IICRC certified
firms
Why hire a professional?
Shaw
Industries, the worlds largest carpet manufacturer, now
requires purchasers to have their carpets professionally
cleaned periodically to insure durability. Since dirt
scratches the carpet fibers and makes the carpet look dull
even when it’s clean, neglecting regular cleaning impacts
the carpet’s condition and may void the
warranty.
Shaw’s
research shows that hot water extraction (also known as
“steam cleaning”) is the most effective cleaning method.
This can be done with a truck mounted extractor in which
only a hose and wand are brought into the home, or by a
professional model portable unit. In either case a cleaning
solution (not a shampoo) is sprayed into the carpet
fibers and extracted back into a
tank.
As of
January 1, 2008 Shaw Industries requires that all
professional cleaning be done by an IICRC certified firm
(Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration
Certification).
Homeowners with “Do it yourself” skills can clean their
own carpets as long as they use the required equipment and
chemicals listed on Carpet Rug Institute’s approved products
website ( see
http://www.carpet-rug.org/residential-customers/cleaning-and-maintenance/seal-of-approval-products/index.cfm).
Look for this seal on
approved products and equipment.

CRI
research also found that some household cleaners cleaned no
better than water and some even damaged carpet fibers.
According
to Shaw’s research, “Professional carpet cleaners are a
great choice for your floor. Their cleaning equipment has
more extraction power than the rental units available to
individuals, and the carpet should dry more quickly. True
professionals also understand the equipment, know the proper
cleaning agents for the situation at hand, and recognize the
differences in fibers and carpet
construction.”
